Sweet!

When the kitchen cabinets were removed, this little bottle fell out. It's a bottle of Equal tablets from 1982 - the first year Equal was sold in America.

The cotton is still in the bottle, so I'd imagine it was in the cabinet for over 26 years, when the apartment was rented for the first time.

Can't you just imagine body-conscious women pulling these out of their pastel-colored purses during dinner?

Kitchen Demolition

The calm before the storm.

Cabinets torn out, floor torn up and replaced with a layer of newspaper over the sticky adhesive.

What a mess.

Stripped down to studs.

That circuit breaker box is gonna have to go.

Anybody wanna buy a fridge? Runs like new!

With the circuit breaker box replaced with a new one (and relocated behind the remaining wall, the room takes on a new dimension.

I-Beam, You-Beam

Cutting a hole in the ceiling revealed the spacing of the I-beams, which were installed in 1981, when this former townhouse was converted into apartments. The spacing of the I-beams looked promising.

I analyzed the pictures for hours afterward, trying to visualize just how a staircase would fit into the picture.

Yeah, this looks good.

Cheers!

An empty apartment and two glasses of champagne.

Our first meal.

Open House

These pictures of the lower apartment were taken on the day of the open house, over a year ago.
